Drawing Basics and Visual Confidence
Drawing Basics and Visual Confidence
Curriculum Map | Digital Creation
Summary
Students build confidence drawing with digital tools. The topic begins with simple grid or object drawing, then grows into faces, houses, compositions, and visual copies that require attention to shape, color, depth, and readability.
This lesson topic replaces grade-specific placement with readiness levels. A new older student can begin at Level 1. A confident younger student can attempt Level 2 with support.
Teacher Overview
Shared introduction:
- Digital drawings are built from simple choices: shape, color, size, and placement.
- Pixel art makes those choices visible because the grid is easy to see.
- Students improve by repeating an idea with small changes.
Common tools:
- Pixilart
- printable pixel templates
- Google Drive or student folder for saved exports
Level 1 - Entry
Goal: Students can make a simple drawing by following a grid or reference.
Teacher prep:
- Open the K3 pixel art slides or prepare printable templates.
- Prepare Pixilart or paper pixel templates.
Steps:
- Show a simple pixel image or template.
- Identify the biggest shapes first.
- Choose a small color set.
- Fill the grid or canvas one section at a time.
- Save or collect the finished drawing.
Suggested activities:
- Color a pixel template.
- Draw a simple tree, star, fish, cat, cup, butterfly, or object.
- Make a 32 x 32 tree or seasonal object.
Check for understanding:
- Student follows the grid or reference.
- Student uses color intentionally.
- Student completes a recognizable image.
Extension:
- Repeat the same object with different colors.
Level 2 - Developing
Goal: Students can draw a recognizable object or face with planned parts and variation.
Teacher prep:
- Prepare the Pixilart canvas.
- Show examples from the original E2+ Unit 01 face and house lessons.
Steps:
- Start a new Pixilart canvas.
- Block the main shape first.
- Add important parts such as hair, eyes, nose, mouth, roof, windows, or tree trunk.
- Use color changes to separate parts.

- Repeat the drawing with a new choice, such as different hair, accessory, color, or object.
Suggested activities:
- Draw a face.
- Draw a friend, teacher, or self again with a variation.
- Draw a 2D house.
- Draw a tree or object with a different color palette.
Check for understanding:
- Student can identify the parts of the drawing.
- Student can make a variation instead of only copying once.
- Student saves or exports the image.
Extension:

Level 3 - Extending
Goal: Students can copy or adapt a more complex reference by simplifying it into readable shapes.
Teacher prep:
- Prepare a book cover, famous artwork, or simple scene reference.
- Prepare canvas size suggestions such as 100 x 100 or 128 x 128.
Steps:
- Choose a clear reference image.
- Identify the largest shapes before details.
- Block the background and foreground.
- Add important objects, characters, or color fields.
- Refine only the details needed for readability.
- Export the finished image.
- Repeat with a new reference or alternate version.
Suggested activities:
- Copy a book cover layout.
- Recreate a famous artwork at low resolution.
- Convert a 2D house into a 3D-looking house.
Check for understanding:
- Student can explain which shapes were most important.
