Hardware and Software
Hardware and Software
Curriculum Map | Digital Foundations
Summary
Students learn that hardware is the part of a computer they can touch, while software is the program or app that gives the computer instructions. The lesson builds a foundation for later work with applications, files, coding, and troubleshooting.
Teacher Overview
Core idea:
- Hardware is physical.
- Software is digital instructions or programs.
- Computers need both to do useful work.
Useful analogy:
- Hardware is like the body of a toy robot.
- Software is like the instructions that tell it what to do.
Level 1 - Entry
Goal: Students can point to hardware and name it.
Teacher prep:
- Open the teacher slides.
- Prepare the hardware labeling activity.
- Prepare real objects or pictures: screen, keyboard, mouse, tablet, printer, speaker.
Steps:
- Show a computer or device.
- Ask students which parts they can touch.
- Name each physical part.
- Complete the hardware labeling activity.
- Share one part and one job it does.
Check for understanding:
- Student can identify at least one hardware part.
- Student can explain that hardware is physical.
Extension:
- Find hardware around the room that is not part of a laptop.
Level 2 - Developing
Goal: Students can sort examples into hardware and software.
Teacher prep:
- Prepare the hardware/software sorting activity.
- Prepare examples such as mouse, screen, keyboard, Pixilart, browser, game, Google Slides.
Steps:
- Review hardware as physical parts.
- Introduce software as apps or programs.
- Sort examples into
hardwareandsoftware. - Discuss one example from each category.
- Complete the sorting activity.
Check for understanding:
- Student can sort physical parts as hardware.
- Student can sort apps or programs as software.
Extension:
- Ask students to name hardware and software they use together.
Level 3 - Extending
Goal: Students can explain how hardware and software work together.
Teacher prep:
- Prepare a simple demonstration such as opening a drawing app and using a mouse or touchscreen.
Steps:
- Choose one task, such as drawing a picture.
- Identify the hardware used for the task.
- Identify the software used for the task.
- Explain what would happen if one part were missing.
- Draw or describe a hardware/software pair.
Check for understanding:
- Student can explain that the app needs hardware to run.
- Student can explain that hardware needs software to do a specific job.
Extension:
- Compare two devices that use different hardware to run similar software.
