Health and Safety
Curriculum Map | Digital Foundations
Summary
Students learn healthy and safe habits for using digital devices. The focus is practical: body position, breaks, careful handling, sharing space, and asking for help when something feels unsafe or confusing.
Teacher Overview
Use this lesson early in the year and revisit it before device-heavy projects. It supports every later strand because students need shared routines for using tools responsibly.
Core idea:
- Digital tools should be used with safe bodies, safe choices, and safe routines.
- Students can notice when they need a break or adult help.
- Device care is part of classroom responsibility.
Level 1 - Entry
Goal: Students can identify safe and unsafe device habits.
Teacher prep:
- Open the teacher slides.
- Prepare one printable activity.
- Prepare a simple demonstration space at a table or device station.
Steps:
- Show safe and unsafe examples of device use.
- Ask students what they notice about hands, eyes, body, and space.
- Practice sitting, holding, or sharing a device safely.

Level 2 - Developing
Goal: Students can explain why posture, breaks, and careful handling matter.
Teacher prep:
- Prepare scenarios such as screen too close, no break, carrying device unsafely, or clicking without asking.
Steps:
- Review safe device habits.
- Present simple scenarios.
- Students identify the problem and safer choice.
- Discuss breaks, eye care, hands, cords, and shared classroom equipment.
- Students write or draw a safe-use reminder.
Check for understanding:

Extension:
- Ask students to make a two-step routine for starting and ending device time.
Level 3 - Extending
Goal: Students can design a safe-use routine for self or class.
Teacher prep:
- Prepare a common classroom workflow, such as laptop cart, tablets, headphones, or partner device use.
Steps:
- Identify a real classroom device routine.
- Students list what could go wrong.
- Students design a clear routine with start, use, and cleanup steps.
