Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality
Curriculum Map | Digital Foundations
Summary
Students learn that augmented reality places digital objects or information over the real world. The lesson emphasizes noticing what is real, what is digital, and how to move safely.
Teacher Overview
Use this lesson when students are ready to compare screen information with physical space.
Core idea:
- AR mixes real spaces with digital objects or information.
- The real world is still there, even when the screen shows extra things.
- Students need safe movement and adult guidance when using AR.
Level 1 - Entry
Goal: Students can identify the real part and digital part of an AR example.
Teacher prep:
- Open the teacher slides.
- Prepare one clear AR example or screenshot.
Steps:
- Show an AR example.
- Ask what is in the real space.
- Ask what the computer added.
- Students sort examples into real part and digital part.
- Discuss looking up, moving slowly, and staying aware of the room.
Check for understanding:
- Student can point to the real part and digital part.
Extension:
- Ask students to draw a digital object they would place in the classroom.
Level 2 - Developing
Goal: Students can explain how AR changes what someone sees.
Teacher prep:
- Prepare a before/after or real/digital comparison.
Steps:
- Review that AR adds digital content to a real space.
- Compare a real scene with an AR scene.
- Students describe what changed.
- Students identify how AR could help someone learn, play, or find information.
- Students name one safe-use rule.
Check for understanding:
- Student can explain that AR does not replace the real world.
Extension:
- Ask students to design an AR label for a classroom object.
Level 3 - Extending
Goal: Students can explain a useful AR idea and a safety consideration.
Teacher prep:
- Prepare a scenario such as museum labels, classroom object labels, maps, or measurement overlays.
Steps:
- Present an AR use scenario.
- Students identify the real-world task.
- Students decide what digital information would help.
- Students identify one movement or attention risk.
- Students share a safe design rule.
Check for understanding:
- Student can connect AR to a real-world purpose.
Extension:
- Ask students to sketch an AR screen for a learning activity.
